Great news followers and music fans! For those of you unaware, Justin Bieber has been the subject of online humiliation, pwnership and en masse criticism. Firstly, the non-hierarchic and loosely organized Metal Militia has attacked Justin Bieber's Baby music video on Youtube, during which they trolled the comments with criticism varying from being rational to homophobic, and many listing artists that are superior to the uninspired music of Justin Bieber. A good 90% of the Metal Militiamen/women were simple heavy metal poseurs who don't listen to anything past the year 1990 unless if it's promoted in Hot Topic. But anyway, I'm not here to debate what is and isn't metal.

However, what really captured attention and actually made an impact was the relentless efforts of 4chan users. Sadly, we will probably never know who came up with the idea for the attack due to 4chan's anonymity. 4chan's users used various tactics of humilation. On Youtube, users took advantage of youtube's commenting section on videos by posting HTML comments that would divert the video to porn and even a pop up claiming that Justin Bieber had died. The group managed to also get "Justin Bieber Syphilis" to the top of the Google Trends Hot Search list. Gaining mass attention and paving the way for copycat actions over the weekend by hundereds of thousands of Youtubers.

Of course, that's not even the most significant and embrassassing action taken against Bieber. For those unaware, Justin Bieber is currently planning his My World Tour, his first headlining tour. To get fans involved in the tour, Bieber (or his management, or both) decided to use this website to allow for fans to vote on what country Bieber should visit first, there were no limitations to the countries. In fact, Antarctica was listen on there. So the good people of 4chan decided to vote for North Korea, and thanks to news spreading quickly on the internet, North Korea was soon in first place, with Israel in second place. Due to the fact that no one in North Korea apart from Kim Jong Il and possibly a few associates have internet access in North Korea, it is obvious that a vast majority (if not all) of the people who voted for North Korea are not from the country. North Korea won the vote successfully, to the applause of 4chansters and people who dislike Justin Bieber's music alike, as well as the confussion and pubescent anger of his fans and admirers. As of now, Justin Bieber's only comment on the situation has been that he's "not dead.", he has yet to comment on other events.

The Misfits - Cough/Cool (Vinyl rip, FLAC/Audacity file types)

Okay, I know I posted an mp3 version of this single that I downloaded before. But I recently got a vinyl (bootlegged, but not too bad for bootlegged vinyl) single for this and I was amazed by this. Imagine how amazing this would be on the original vinyl. Anyways, I'm announcing a new format for my blog. From now on, I will only post rips from my vinyl collection (I've been collecting since the beginning of the year), and these rips will posted as FLAC files (lossless for the win), and the original Audacity files that my vinyls are recorded on to. I must say, the Audacity files sound better than the FLAC files (more dynamics especially). But the FLAC represents a much better quality file than the MP3, and can be listened to on a mobile device (you may need to install software on your mobile audio device to play it, if you have an iPod, you'd definetly need to install software to allow for FLAC files to be played). Enough of that audiophile junk, enjoy the record.

Samhain - November Coming Fire

Okay, so Samhain were a New Jersey based Deathrock band formed by ex-Misfits frontman and founder Glenn Danzig. This is was happened, in 1983, The Misfits broke up, Glenn was getting tired of problems within the band, he even told Henry Rollins of Black Flag that he planned to disband The Misfits months before their Halloween of '83 performance which ended the band. So The Misfits went their seperate ways. Glenn had plently of songs that he had already written that he planned to use in a different project, he was also growing more interested in Deathrock and Post-Punk bands (Christian Death, Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus), and decided to merge these dark Post-Punk sounds with the image and fast-paced music of The Misfits. He even got all the members of Samhain to grow devilocks (hey, Jerry Only really did do something for the original Misfits). Anyways, Samhain released three albums (Initium, November Coming Fire and Final Descent) and an extended play called Unholy Passion. If you ask me, November Coming Fire being their best. In 1987, Samhain broke up after Rick Rubin of Def Jam Recordings approached him with the idea of forming a rock super-group with Glenn as vocalist. Glenn refused to do so unless bassist Eerie Von of Samhain could be in this new band. Both agreed that the band's sound would have to change (haha, The Cult), and out of this lineup change and new sound came Danzig, a band that would allow Glenn to acquire currency, bitches, and MTV fame.

Okay, so I found these guys on youtube the other day, I was browsing horror-punk vids and came across this. I noticed that they don't sound much like other horror bands. They don't have a guitarist. They instead, they utilize dual synthasizers. They incorporate a lot of Deathrock, Electrorock, and even some speedy Metal into their fairly unique sound. I'd recommend this to people who like bands as diverse as old AFI, The Birthday Massacre, Paralitikos and Calabrese.

Camp Z - Mental Straightjacket

Okay, so these guys are fairly obscure. And obscurity is ones ticket to coolness these days eh? So these guys have been around for around four years, and were originally conceived as a solo project for the French goth musician Manu/Zorch around 2006 (I think). So it's their third album, not much else I can say as this band are quite new to me, I'm too lazy to type in the tracklist as it's kinda long. But enjoy the album :)

AFI - All Hallows EP

Okay, I know that you're probably thinking; "AFI are a bunch of whiny Emo fags". Well, you're wrong. Before AFI became a mainstream rock band, they were (beleive it or not), a Horror Punk band (and before that, a Hardcore band). Now, this is a pretty cool EP, it's long been out of print (on vinyl), although you can still purchase it on CD (which is not even as good). So, there's a Misfits cover on here, and like 3 other original songs. Download it, especially if you hate AFI. Because you'd be suprised to find that they were once an amazing band.

MGMT - Congratulations

Alright, first off, I'm a lazy ass and didn't feel like uploading anything in a while... Did ya miss me? (Obviously no). So, new MGMT album. Fucking superb. They're last album was good, but this really shows that they are more than simply a pop band. Face it, there's a 12 minute song on here, and they seem to enjoy talking about Brian Eno. The change in sound reminded me off... The Horrors. Which is not very relevant. So there's a lot of both electronic and acoustic guitars going on through this record, there are no Time To Pretend or Kids-esque songs. Just tripptacular psychedelic songs. No wonder it took three years for this, they were doing too much acid to concentrate. Which is exactly why this album is fucking fab. Download it, then buy it on CD or vinyl, but preferably vinyl.

So far, this is one of my favorite albums of 2010. Unless Neils Children or some other band do better.

Crass - The Feeding of the 5000

Okay, first album by Crass. Yeah, the first real Anarchist punk band. People tend to say the Sex Pistols were the first Anarcho-punk band just because they had a song called Anarchy In The UK. But people tend to not see that Anarchism is really an umbrella term for various anti-Statist ideologies. Now enough with all this talk about Anarchism. So Crass were basically a complete challenge to the state of Punk music and the Punk culture of the time. Basically, it was... can you really call yourself a Punk and be signed to 100,000 pound contracts? (Yeah, The Clash haha). Well, Crass essentially said "No, Punk is dead". Of course, they were referring to the ethic, which is entirely as true these days as it was 32 years ago. You have "Punks" on the Warped Tour (this is directed at the people who call Anti-Flag the purest Punk band to walk the earth). Now... where was I? Oh yeah. Crass were the most elitist and exclusive of Punk bands to walk the earth. If you play for record companies, you're a sellout. End of story. It's like reverse-Elitism.

What really attracted me to them was their dense guitarwork, it was a live set, so of course it sounded better. There are two obvious influences on this record. Yeah, recently I've been getting into some Crust stuff, exploring other areas of music per say. R.I.P. Rowland S. Howard

Yesterday, on December 30th, the legendary (and fairly obscure) guitarist Rowland S. Howard died. Rowland is argueably best known for his contributions to the Australian Noise Rock band The Birthday Party (an evolvement from Rowland's earlier band Boys Next Door), who's sound took aspects from Post-punk, Noise, Avant-Garde, Blues, Garage and Jazz. Apart from The Birthday Party, he has played with the likes of Henry Rollins, Lydia Lunch, Einsturzende Neubauten and Thurston Moore. Halso fronted the late 80s/early 90s Post-punk band These Immortal Souls. Apart from his musical work, he would occasionally venture into acting, appearing in Queen of The Damned and Wings of Desire. Most recently he released a solo album, Pop Crimes and produced HTRK's Merry Me Tonight LP. Howard died of Liver Cancer.

Clan of Xymox - Clan of Xymox

Okay, so I haven't posted here in a few weeks, apologies for the absences, but I'm busy. Anyways. Here's the first album by the Dutch Goth/Darkwave band Clan of Xymox. Its a great album, I've known of the Clan (ironic name) for a couple years now, but I never really paid attention to their work. Anyways a friend of mine played of their songs to me and I was impressed, so I downloaded this album , I fell in love, the end. Period. Fucking love it. Done!

If you ask me, this was basically the first one of the first proto-Darkwave albums, Darkwave before Darkwave to say. You see, Goth history went like this:

late 70's - Post-punk predecessors
early 80's - First wave of Gothic-Post punk bands
mid 80's - Ethereal wave emerges, Gothic Post-punk turns into Gothic rock
late 80's - Gothic rock movement reaches its commercial height, Darkwave develops
early-mid 90's - Gothic rock falls down, Darkwave, Industrial and Electrogoth start to take the subculture by storm
late 90's - Goth becomes an item of hate and shock in the US where the movement quickly disperses in the wake of Columbine. Cybergoths emerge out of ex-Goths who decide to progress. In Europe goth keeps growing
early 00's - New Industrial bands like The Birthday Massacre take from Goth, blend it with Industrial and Synths and make something new. Meanwhile, the underground Deathrock Revival, centered around bands like All Gone Dead and Bloody Dead and Sexy appears
late 00's - Lo-Fi Goth develops and starts expanding.

The Misfits - Cough/Cool single

This was the first recording ever made by the New Jersey based Horror Punk band the Misfits. The versions of Cough/Cool and She differ from the versions featured on the Collection I compilation album, in that these have no guitar on them. Danzig played a synthesizer on both tracks. So the EP is more of a Synthpunk record then it is a Horror Punk record. Hence why I specifically labeled both songs as Synthpunk in the download. The quality isn't excellent, its taken from an old vinyl with quite a bit of crackling and poping in it. But its still a good album, enjoy :)

Okay, this is a story that I wrote, myself. It is drawn from a short story I wrote for english class, that part being at the beginning. But the remainder was written in my spare time.

I'd also like to give a disclaimer that the story may not be considered to be of "good morality ". In fact, I posted this on the Horrors Forum (Horum). I was warned that if I do this again, then I could be banned. My story was censored and replaced with the words; "Nothing better to say."

I'd also like to apologise for the lack of music posts lately, I've always said, I'm a busy man.

So, here we go:

The Rape, by Brandon George

The nurse left work at 5:00pm, she was exhausted, she had a long day of work and now had to go home to look after her son. Life for her was depressing, her husband had recently left her upon learning of her bisexual tendencies. The conservative community around her had also rejected her for such.

“Jesus Christ I could kill myself!” she said to herself on the walk down to her house. She lived four blocks from the hospital she worked at. She hated everything about where she lived. Especially the hospital she worked at. Although she was happy to assist the ill, she hated the people she worked with. As she kept walking, it started to rain. She took out her iPod. Playing some obnoxious Punk rock on it. She drowned herself in the sound. Paying little attention to what would happen.

When she was only a block from her house, a man came up beside her. The man was around five and a half feet tall. About an inch shorter then her. He asked her; “Where do you think you‘re going?” She didn’t notice at first. Then he shouted at her “Where do you think you‘re going!!!” At which point, she turned around and realized he was there.

“Ugh, I‘m going home, go away.”

“No, you‘re coming with me!”

He grabbed her by the hips, and threw her to the ground. He then dragged her behind a building. She was conscious, in fact, she had barely been hurt. But she was frightened as hell!!! What was happening to her?

The man slapped her on the cheek, Turning it red. He then tore of her clothing, While she tried resisting, she couldn’t stop him. The man then slapped her other cheek, this time with a leather slap jack. It gave her a slight cut near her eye.

The man then proceeded to pull down his pants, taking out his partially erect penis at the same time. The nurse then punched him in the eye, temporarily blinding him. He briefly blanked out, she took her clothes and quickly ran.

The man, finding his place, turned around, starting to chase her. She screamed, she ran, she panicked, she didn’t know where she was running to, Out in the rain, half naked, she ran. She ran to her house. Crossing the street.

She tripped over a noticeably large pothole. Falling to the ground head first, being knocked unconscious. The world turning into a foray of psychedelic colors and sounds. Was she dreaming? Yes? Was she dying? Maybe.

But the man caught up to her, dragging her away. He raped her, inside out. Eventually he grew tired of her. Slitting her throat with a dagger, he threw her corpse to the ground. He left. A victim of his own crime, now he would face the pain.

Her body was never found...

Okay, so lately I have gone slightly overboard on The Horrors, they're my favorite band, but yes, I have been skipping out lately on other music. So after this post I'm probably not going to post much on The Horrors until something happens to them (i.e. they do another US tour, they release a new album/single, they break up ect.) and yes! For the news they are releasing a new single called Whole New Way, which appeared on the Japanese version of Primary Colours. But they've re-recorded and remixed it and are releasing it on vinyl with the b-side being Primary Colours from the album of the same name, and I will include Whole New Way at the end of this post. Now, the reason I'm reposting this is because I bought the album legally on CD and I realised the quality is slightly better, plus I scanned all the liner notes for the album, for the fans :)

The Gruesomes - Tyrants of Teen Trash

This was the first album by the semi-obscure, depending on yourself ovcourse, yet very respected Canadian Garage-punk band The Gruesomes. Half the songs are original, the rest covers of 60's Garage and Freakbeat songs. The album proved to be a notorious influence on the british New Thing band The Horrors. Especially the cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's Jack The Ripper. A great album for fans of Garage punk, freakbeat and b-rated surf music.

Review: The Horrors with openers Casper Bangs and Crocodiles live @ The Black Cat

First, off, pure excellence, the greatest live show I've ever been to, and my first at the Black Cat. The concert was certainly not big enough to take place at the 9:30 Club. And as a result, the Black Cat proved the perfect setting for the event. The Horrors, The Crocodiles and Casper Bangs, two great and one slightly mediocre but respectable bands all in one room with psychaedelic results!

So lets go in chronological order now shall we?

First off, Casper Bangs, now Bangs are a local DC based band who play what I'll describe as the offspring Belinda Butcher and Rivers Cuomo (don't know who I'm talking about? Belinda was the guitarist for My Bloody Valentine, Rivers is the lead vocalit for Weezer). Infact, I met the lead singer for the band after his set. I was right at the front of the stage and he just walked of the stage into the crowd. I asked him who his influences were and he said that they were Noise rock bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Pop-rock bands like The Beach Boys. He's a nice guy with a weird fashion sense (he really stood out from the crowd and other bands, he wore a red v-neck sweater, grey pants, a white button down shirt and a black bow tie). I gave him my email address and he said he'd be happy to send some songs. Infact he passed a list around for people to write their addresses. He also reeks of alchohol.

And now, the second opening act. The awesome, and quite original band Crocodiles. Now I had heard the Crocodiles' music before, well after I found they were opening for the Horrors which I heard a while back. But I never knew that they were so awesome on stage! They take from The New Thing, Garage punk and Alternative Dance music. I'm gonna call it No Dance lol. They're frontman, who's name I don't know sadly, is wild, and over the top playful. The girl next to me said she saw them before and that the frontman looks a lot like Bob Dylan and tends to dance a lot on stage. He is exactly like that! The first few songs, he was doing all sorts of stuff on stage, bouncing on the floor, it was pure awesomeness! Midway through the set he went to guitar and actually had to concentrate lol. The energy goes out as the set goes on. But nonetheless, pure excellence in the field of performance art.

Ah, everything goes dark in the Black Cat, everyone waits impatiently, we all want the Horrors, well... we are Horrors! The background music plays, it goes off, onstage comes the great Tomethy Furse, followed by every other Horror, except one Faris Badwan.

"Hey Rhys!" I scream, mispronouncing his name by accident to say Rise.

"Its Rhys [Rhees]" he tells me

Ah, Mirrors Image starts playing, and up bursts the amazing and energetic Horrors vocalist Faris Badwan, he's full of both uncontrollable energy, and deep concentration. As the band play Three Decades, he falls into the crowd, no-one can hold him, he falls to the floor we all help him up, I touch his shoulder (fanboy moment!) He's helped back onstage by a roadie. He's tangled in his microphone wire. He goes through the set, at times wandering the stage, at other times, playing with the pipes above his head. He spits onto his setlist, saliva covering the tape of it (I took the setlist home with me! And covered my right hand fingers in Faris' saliva, pissing of my dad at the same time) Then after an amazing performance of Sea Within a Sea, they storm of the stage. But come back with the demand of the crowd. As an encore, they play a brand new song I've never heard before, it sounds like a mix of Kraftwerk and The Cramps, and both Rhys and Tom are playing keyboards... Oh wait! Its a cover of Ghost Rider by Suicide! Pure awesomness! Next, they go back to the days of Strange House, playing Gloves (Hacking desperatly in a sea of appendages!), with Faris swinging of the pipes above him. And they play one more song, Count in Fives, where the crowd shout out HEY! At the percise timing. They then leave the stage, the crowd satisfied. A good night and into a new day, a movement in the process.

DOUBLE POST: Robots in Disguise - We're in the Music Biz/The Horrors upcoming concert

Okay, so its been a while since I've last posted, I'm a busy man, I have to juggle school and the free time I have. Anyways, I've decided to do a double post to make up for the lack of recent posts. What was the last thing I posted? I think it was something by The Gaa Gaa's and Good Night and I Wish. But we're here and now huh?

Okay so first off, an album by the british Dance-punksters Robots in Disguise. Now, if your like me, you will look at the album cover and think (oh... its just Robots in Disguise screaming and wearing skinny ties). Well you've been fooled. Because they're both covered topless and drenched in body paint. As a result, iTunes covers they're breasts in bars which have the album title and artist name on it (don't belive me? Check out for yourself). It was the first, and as far as this day the only RID record I have, well stolen. Because I'm simply a casual fan per say. I'm not as focused on RID as say Neils Children. But I respect them and enjoy some of their music. And belive me this album is an awesome Dance-punk album, plus an underground cult favorite. I first found out about Robots in Disguise after watching and becoming a fan of The Mighty Boosh, which in turn, I never watched until after I heard of The Horrors, and amazingly I was once in a nightclub with Noel Fielding, unsuprisingly at a Horrors concert, and only found out months afterwards. Anyways if your interested, then scroll down to the end of this post to download the album.

And now for part two. As I (partially) mentioned in the title, there is an upcoming Horrors concert near me, yeah at the awesome Black Cat nightclub in Washington DC (I'll admit, first time going there, and I've heard its like a slightly smaller 9:30 Club). This is the second time I'll be seeing The Horrors, and the first time seeing them headline a concert (first time they opened for The Kills). Now I've been a Horrors fan since February of 09 when my ex online girlfriend told be about them. I was amazed, the best thing out of England since The Jesus and Mary Chain, yes, even better then Bloc Party or Franz Ferdinand (two bands I also enjoy). Plus twice is dark, loud, throbbing and psychaedelic! But the Horrors aren't the only focus now aren't they. There are two opening acts, one, a great, and quite obscure, Garage-Dance band called The Crocodiles (but more commonly refered Crocodiles) and a rather mediocre local Pop rock artist named Casper Bangs (who I don't at all like, but I will try to keep quiet about Bangs). It sounds like a good concert. And I will, if I must! Get to the very front of the concert and be right under Faris Badwans nose! And I once was right under Kim Gordon at a Sonic Youth concert! Right at the fucking front! AWESOME!!!!

UK Decay - The Black 45 EP

Okay so this is an EP from the old school British Post-punk band UK Decay, if your wondering about the low frequency of recent posts its because I'm all busy with school work and stuff. So I may only post something once a week for a while from now (and by that, I mean a couple of months). Anyways UK Decay would turn out to be a massive influence on the 2nd wave of Gothic Rock bands that followed them (Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, Nosferatu ect.), but had already fallen apart by the time these bands were taken seriously my the music press and gained success. As a result, UK Decay are mostly forgotten, but have kept a cult following that resonates today and even reformed back in 2008 to play the Drop Dead Festival.

I thought I'd just like to make a post on current Indie genres and movements. As well as criticise bands labeled as Indie, when they're totally not. Plus list bands, which are Indie, withing their movements

So, lets start a list :

Alternative Dance

- Orgins in the mid-2000's. Gained mainstream attention around 2008 when Bloc Party released the Intimacy album.

- Draws from Dance-pop music, 80's Synthpop, Dance-punk and the Post-punk revival of the 00's.

Notable bands

- Franz Ferdinand
- Magic Wands

Alternative/Underground Hip Hop

- Has its orgins in the late 80's and early 90's, at a time when many musicians wanted to keep to the core ideals of the Hip Hop culture, yet at the same time be individually artistic.

- Many artists have come with in the realms of mainstream attention, but have at the same time, kept to their underground roots.

- Notable record labels include Def Jux and Rawkus Records.

Note: A lot of major label, heavily popular bands are labeled Alternative rock by the mainstream. To us Indie people, those bands aren't alternative because they're at the state where they aren't an alternative to anything, i.e. they are the mainstream. Examples of these bands include:

Those are Pop Punk bands.

Cyberpunk

- Technically, not a genre, but an aesthetic, and a collective term for musicians who either incorporate a fashion or visual sense simular to cyberpunk, or lyrical themes related to cyberpunk.

- Covers genres as varied as EBM, Avant-garde, House music and Post-Industrial

Dark Cabaret

- Orgins in the early 00's, gained some mainstream attention around The Dresden Dolls

- Notable predecessors include Goth band The Sex Gang Children and Rozz Williams' solo work with Gitane Demone.

Deathrock/Gothic Rock

- Orgins in the year 1979, when Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus, arguably the first gothic rock song, was released.

- Draws from Punk rock, Glam rock, Post-punk, Dub and Art rock. Early bands like Bauhaus also drew from Funk.

- Achieved a degree of mainstream popularity in the mid-late 80's, with bands such as the Sisters of Mercy, Fields of The Nephilim and The Cure gaining pop-chart success.

- Has gone through five phases, the first wave (1979-1984), second wave (1985-1990, when the genre reached its mainstream peak, and achieved a more rock-based sounds), third wave (1991-1999, when its popularity went underground, and the genre added elements of Neoclassical and Electronic), fourth wave (2000-2009, also refered to as the Deathrock Revival, due to the resurgance of interest in the early 80's goth and deathrock sound, which resulted in goth bands adopting a punkier sound.) and the arguably existing fifth wave (2009-present) which has birthed the new Lo-Fi Goth movement.

- Garage Punk has its orgins in the mid 80's in bands such as The Gruesomes who were part of an obscure underground Garage rock revival, blending 60's Garage bands like The Sonics with Punk rock sounds such as The Ramones and Black Flag.

- The Garage Rock Revival includes both the Garage Punk bands, and the newer Garage bands who stuck with original sound of the 60's, such as the Fuzztones.

- Carbon/Silicon
- Dwarves
- The Fuzztones
- The Hives (technically, no longer an Indie band)
- The (International) Noise Conspiracy

Hardcore Punk/Post-Hardcore/Melodic Hardcore

- Hardcore Punk developed in the late 70's and early 80's in the United States out of the pre-existing Punk Rock scene. Many of these bands were more inspired by the angry raging UK Punk Rock scene (The Sex Pistols, Crass) then the more melodic New York punk scene (Ramones, Blondie). The Hardcore bands played faster, angrier, and more aggresive music than the traditional Punk bands.

- Melodic Hardcore bands incorporated elements of Pop Punk and Skate Punk music, many of these bands are jokingly refered to as Warped Tour bands, due to their commercial appeal.

- Post Hardcore developed in the mid-80's around the DC Hardcore scene, these bands reacted to the violence in the scene. And incorporated elements of Post-punk as well. Some Postcore bands were refered to as "Emo" bands, but many rejected the term and blasted it as bullshit.

- Various subgenres and offshoots of Hardcore include; Artcore, Grindcore Metalcore and Grunge music.

Industrial/Post-Industrial (read for subgenres and offshoots)

- Industrial music has its orgins in the late 70's towards the end of the 1st wave of Punk rock. Although the genre had many Avant-Garde prototypes. Including Post-punk bands such as Joy Division, Electronic groups Kraftwerk and Gary Numan, the Musique Concrete of Pierre Shaeffer, Noise artists such as Lou Reed and Luigi Russoli and Krautrock bands such as Neu! and Can.

- Post-Industrial is an umbrella term for various forms of Industrial music that took the original elements of the genre, and would create new genres by so. These genres include Industrial Hip Hop, Industrial Rock, Electro-Industrial, Digital Hardcore, Industrial Jungle Pussy Punk, EBM and Industrial Metal.

Arguably, the first Lo-fi recordings were those done throught the famed Mapleson Cylinders, prior the World War One. However, the term would not be used musically until the 1980's,

- Lo-Fi has no unifying sound, so genres varying from Jazz to Indie to Black Metal have been labeled Lo-Fi.

Mathcore

- Mathcore grew out of the Math Rock movement in the early 90's. As the term suggests, it fuses Math Rock with Grindcore and Metalcore music. The movement has, in recent years, gained an expanding following.

Noise Pop

- Noise Pop originated in the mid 80's when The Jesus and Mary Chain took too many amphetamines, forgot to tune their guitars, started some riots and created a dense, feedback drenched sound, with fuzzy basses and guitars, and a two piece drum kit... yet managed to bring all that punk noise into the context of a pop song. It originated out of Post-punk, Psychadelic and Rock and Roll music. If you want to be more technical, you could say The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat album was the first Noise Pop album.

- The genre is closely related to the Shoegaze genre, which has resulted in some bands to be labeled as being of both genres.

Noise Rock/Noise Punk

- Noise rock developed over a long period in the 60's and 70's before becoming truly noticeable as a genre in the early-mid 80's. Noise rock can be viewed as Noise Pop's more extreme cousin. Noise rock took more from the academic noise music genre (Lou Reed, John Cage, Luigi Russoli). But can again, be traced back to The Velvet Underground. The genre has a noticeable relationship with Industrial Rock.

Post-punk/Post-punk Revival

- Post-punk developed in the late 70's in England and America out of the Punk Rock explosion of 1977. The first postpunk bands were inspired by the speed and fast rock and roll of the first wave of punk rock and protopunk bands. But felt the urge to take the punk ideals to break down the genre's barriers. The genre, and post punk scene would remain active into the mid 80's by which time its various offshoots, such as Gothic rock, Synthpop, Industrial and Alternative rock would overtake its popularity.

- In the early 00's, various Indie bands began performing Post-punk music again, as a result, the term Post-punk began to appear in the media again. Many of these bands were also influenced by Indie rock and pop bands. A few singed to major labels. By the late 00's, many bands such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand moved onto Alternative Dance music. While Neils Children moved onto a genre that they had already influenced, Zombie Garage.

Post-Rock

- The term Post-Rock was first used bye NME magazine to describe the british Post-Punk band Public Image Ltd. Who they declared "arguably the first post-rock group." However the term was taken seriously by the mid 90's to describe underground bands who borrowed from krautrock, avant garde classical, punk, jazz and shoegaze, as well as various forms of music. These were the first Post-Rock bands. Most Post-Rock bands are instrumental bands, although some such as Sigur Ros have made use of vocals.

- The term is not without controversy, as some Post-rock bands such as Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor have openly rejected and mocked the term.

- Psyhobilly has its orgins in the 1st wave of Punk rock in New York City some bands, influenced by punk rocks ideal of going back to rock basics, decided to go back to the most primitive form of rock music, Rockabilly, this, coubled with the sci fi and horror influenced fashion and lyrics of some bands, spawned the Psychobilly genre. Some bands in the early 80's inserted a faster, punkier flavor to the genre, creating Punkabilly music.

Shitgaze

- Shitgaze developed in the mid- late 00's out of the Garage revival and Lo-Fi scenes. The Shitgaze ethic is to reject conventional studio recording techniques, favoring low cost or free DIY techniques, and the view that instruments should be loud and heavily distorted and fuzzy, taking that ethic partially from the Shoegazers, but taking in from traditional rock and roll as well. The idea is also to produce music on the treble side, so basses are either rejected, or played at a high key. The genre is also linked to the Lo-Fi Goth genre through bands such as Zola Jesus.

The New Thing/Zombie Garage

- Okay so these two terms have been used interchangeably to refer to a new form Alternative Indie rock that derives from Garage Punk, Post-Punk, Horror Punk, Indie rock and Shoegazing. The genre developed in the mid 00's around the London underground scene, and has become quite popular in the UK especially in 2009, around the same time, the Indie scene took a turn as well.
Most bands are British, although The Jangletones are based in Sweden, and The Dead are American.

- Many bands are noted for their fashion sense, which normally makes use of simple black and white, though predominately black, fashion sense. Common clothing choices include band shirts, skinny jeans, blazers, band buttons, winklepickers, button down shirts, ties and various other accessories.

- I have a Zombie Garage studio project called The Dead

So, whats been happening this year???

This year there's been a lot happening in Indie and Underground music this past year, when you look at it, a lot has changed, many bands have changed styles, many new genres have received a lot more attention... and popularity. Some bands have had some good albums come out... others, not so good. You can look at the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, a year ago they were a Garage-Pop band, now they're an Alternative Dance band. The Horrors, since day one, the greatest band in England, were viewed as not even being a music group a year ago, but today? They're being nominated for a Mercury award. Plus Sonic Youth have shown that just because they're going fifty, they're full of as much energy as they had back in 1981. Of course, there are the low ends of Indie this year. you look at TV on The Radio, the most overrated Hipster waste ever. Kings of Leon are embarrisingly labeled Indie rock, how the fuck? How can you call a group Indie when they're signed to Sony, RCA and Columbia? Haha what a waster and shame.

But there's more to look forward to? Its only August.

Magic Wands - Magic, Love & Dreams

Okay, this actually came out a few months back, but I didn't upload it. Anyways here's the first extended play by the Alternative Dance duo the Magic Wands. Anyways I caught the band opening for The Kills at the 9:30 Club here in DC (the same concert where I caugh The Horrors). Imagine them as a good version of the Ting Tings, who can actually make music, and not sell for cash. Funny thing is, I was once talking with a woman at the 9:30 Club and she told me the worst concert she ever went to was a Ting Tings concert at the 9:30 Club ironically lol. Neils Children - X.Enc

This, is the debut full length album by an excellent London-based genre-bending band called Neils Children. I'd like to say, they've now jumped onto a genre with two names, some call it "The New Thing", after a zine of the same name, and some refer to it as "Zombie Garage", a term that was invented by last.fm users to describe The Horrors. I'll have to admit, I think the New Thing has grown a lot this year, with new bands like S.C.U.M becoming more and more noticeable, the Horrors had Primary Colours reaching #25 on the charts, and this new Neils Children album, a pure gem. This is a pure work of noisy art, I love it. However, Neils Children aren't all gone with their Indie-Punk roots, the song I'm Ill, stands from the other songs by, instead of using atonal feedback and distorted guitars, makes use of a jangly C86 sound almost. Other than that, Zombie Garage for you! 5 STARS, this is going in my top albums of the year list!

Orly Taitz, Grand Wizardess of The Birthers

If you live in America, like me (or you receive American political news in another country), you should be well aware of this evil slut. This is Orly Taitz, a conservative wingnut who without the slightest sense of intelligence, has repressented a rediculous, unintelligent, and stupid court lawsuit filed by one Stefan Cook. Stephan, a dumb birther himself, volunteered to serve on year in Afghanistan starting July 15th. He then filed a lawsuit claiming he shouldn't serve because Barack Obama isn't the president. His lawyer, the wicked russian witch Orly Taitz. The reason I'm bringing this up is of course, because I'm angered. Now as a self-described Socialist, I'm not too much of a fan of Barack Obama. He's too willing to compromise with the right wing, so willing his healthcare bill may no longer include a public option. But he's the lesser evil. He is a victim of racism. The wingnuts and the republican fringe (I won't use the "F" or "N" words, i.e. Fascism and Nazism) are getting out of hand, and making themselves look like idiots at the exact same moment. I hate republicans, conservatives and right wingers (I'm sorry if it implies to you, the reader) but this is pure idiocracy. Glenn Beck says he's a racist, Taitz says he's Kenyan. I'll prove to important points to you:

Obama is often said to be anti-caucasian by the wingnuts. Glenn Beck stating often that he hates white people. This wouldn't make sense, considering that A) Barack Obama's half caucasian, B) a very large percentage of his staff are caucasian and C) his own mother is caucasian. Surely you don't see something odd about your own statements Mr. Beck now do you?

A dumb and common arguement: Barack Obama was born in Kenya, so therefore he can't run for president. Now, there's a problem with saying that. According to Obama's birth certificate, Barack Obama was born in Honalulu, Hawaii am I right? To an american-born mother of American citizenship and a Kenyan father of Kenyan citizenship. Technically, since he was born in an American state (Hawaii became a state in 1959, two years before Obama's birth in 1961), Obama can be inaugurated as pesident, and this is the LAW!!! Now get that in your heads you dumb birthers. Anyone, in their right mind, would be aware of that. Plus if your too fucking stupid to belive it. Look at his bloody birth certificate, its in the public domain now! Look!

S.C.U.M. - Visions Arise single

Okay now this band here are some pretty awesome shit. Zombie Garage music (bands like The Horrors, The Dead.). Nice, noisy and chaotic. Faris Badwan and Joshua Third of The Horrors are both fans. Faris stated in an interview that they were kinda like the No-Wave band Mars (great stuff) and Joshua has a t shirt for this single (see below). Anyways worth the download.

The Sisters of Mercy - Body and Soul EP

This is a now rare EP by the British Goth band The Sisters of Mercy, that was released in 1984 on the Sisters own Merciful Release label. Now, Andrew Eldritch has, since the 90's, claimed that the Sisters aren't a goth band. Okay seriously, maybe he now wants to move on from that reputation. But back then, lets face it, you had Patricia Morrison on bass, now I read an article saying that Eldritch only picked Morrison for bass not because she was a good bassist (she is) but because of her gothic pin up appearence. Plus look at the album art, the two romans in the night looks extremely dark and well somewhat gothic. For more info on the sisters of mercy, visit this link.

Interpol - Turn on The Bright Lights

The first album by the amazing American Post-punk revival band Inerpol. Compared to their later work, the album is very dark, depressing and somewhat minimalist. The album has sold very well for an independant release, over 400,000 copies in America and 86,000 in the UK. Despite only peaking at number 158 and 101 respectively in both countries charts. If you want an idea of the sound, imagine that Joy Division were stripped as far down as you could go without robbing them of music, there you have an excellent and depressing album.

Review: Sonic Youth @ 9:30 Club

Tonight (make it yesterday) I saw the great Avant Garde Noisy Indie Alternative Post Punk Rock band Sonic Youth at the 9:30 Club in DC. What can I say? Pure excellence and liveliness. Sonic Youth haven't sat down with age, they've gotten better. 2 encores, including the classic Death Valley 69. The main setlist consisted mostly of songs from The Eternal plus a track from Sister (White Cross). As I said earlier, the show was played to a sold out 9:30 Club, their second show at the club in 2 days. Tomorrow they will be playing The National in Richmond, Virginia.

BTW I swear I saw Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt of Green Day on the balcony, I should of taken a pic.

But first off.

The Entrance Band:

The Entrance band are an LA based Cream meets Nirvana meets Black Sabbath kinda band. I guess one called call them a psychadelic rock band, but who cares about that. Personally, I'm not a fan, although they do have some nice guitar work. I feel as if this music is kinda mainstream, I mean like, its canned per say. Not that they are, but its a form of music thats just uninteresting y'know. I'm not a fan of Psychadelic Rock I'll admit. They would probably find a better audience back in '68 then they would now in '09. Plus twice as fresh.

Headlining: Sonic Youth

Goddamnit I don't want to give a destription, lets face it, one of the best bands on the face of current Avant-Garde music. They killed live, they have the energy and the want to do this after almost 30 years and they are strong as ever. I'm guessing a lot better than last nights gig. According to what I've read. Strangely while waiting for SY to come on, I fell into a deep and intricate conversation on Indie rock with a group of teenaged Sonic Youth fans, I being the youngest of 14. For once I could share my sense of taste with one who knows of it in person. We were talking of bands ranging from The Cure to Foals to Big Black to Fugazi, it was great. Much like the whole show. Even the railing infront of the stage didn't bother me. There was only a 1 1/2 foot distance between me and the stage. Anyway, Thurston sang with his mighty voice into the great microphone, at times dancing with his guitar. There was one piece which sampled a piece of modern R&B music (not Rock and Roll but Chris Brown stuff) Steve, Thurston, Lee, Kim and Mark all seemingly laughed along with the audience before twisting it with some power distortion. A great show I will never forget. Plus two impressive encores and some nice merch.

Yepp, tonight I'll be attending a sold-out Sonic Youth concert at the 9:30 Club in DC. Sonic Youth have, as you probably know, recently released a new album (The Eternal) and are currently touring to support it ofcourse. Based on what I've seen, the setlist will mostly consist of The Eternal songs plus a couple of older stuff and the encore will be old stuff. Opening for them will be the LA-based Psychadelic-Alternative rock band The Entrance Band, now I don't know much of them so this will be something new to me, I admit I'm not much of a fan of Psych rock bands (except Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd) but this could be good, lol.

Black Flag - Six Pack EP

Classic EP by the LA Hardcore band Black Flag, at the time Black Flag's lead vocalist was Dez Cadena who as a result sang lead vocals on the EP. Cadena would switch to guitar shortly afterwards as he had worn out his voice within the quick time frame of Black Flag. The band recruited Henry Rollins to sing on the band's debut album which was released later that year, on which Dez Played second guitar with Greg Ginn, Dez was kicked out by Ginn in 1983 and Black Flag would from then on tour as a four piece and disband in 1986. Aside from the Six Pack EP, Cadena also sang on the Louie Louie single in '81, which is of course a cover of a Richard Berry song.

The Cramps - Greavest Hits

This was the first release (and only EP) by the influential and far reaching Horror-inspired black clad New York based band The Cramps. The EP was released in 1979 and is often viewed as a landmark in the revival of Rockabilly music and in the birth of Psychobilly music, although the band didn't like the term used to describe their music, despite the fact that they often used the word on their early gig posters. The term Psychobilly was coined by songwriter Wayne Kemp in the lyrics for the Johnny Cash song One Piece at A Time. The Cramps proved to be a huge influence on a variety of bands, ranging from Punk rock to Zombie Garage to Goth to their own Psychobilly. My personal favorite off this album, the heavy ass beats on their cover of The Trashmen's Surfin' Bird, gotta love that. Track's 2 - 5 are all covers just so you know.

Neils Children - Change/Return/Success

Contrary to popular view, this was the first album by the british Post-punk pre Zombie Garage band Neils Children (also known as NEiLS CHiLDREN). It was released in 2004 on Soft City Recordings , who based on what I know, have probably demised as I can't find that they have released anything since 2004 (as far as I know, this was the last release). The album is an obvious influence on Zombie Garage music (band's like The Horrors i.e. Faris Badwan's Horror's and The Dead, i.e. the one man band I front.) I absolutely love this album, and its pretty rare I haven't seen it on a single blog yet lol. The album includes the cult-classic I Hate Models.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico

This was the first album by the influential rock n roll band The Velvet Underground. The album was originally released on Verve Records and sold poorly at the time of its release, for the most part because of its (at the time) controversial subject matter (such subjects as BDSM, drug abuse, sexuality and prostitution), which, although is a lot more of the norm in popular music today were at the time taboo subjects to discuss. The record, hence its name, also features German vocalist Nico on 3 tracks. The album was recorded in 1966 at during Andy Warhol's Exploding Pastic Inevitable event. The heavy associations that the Underground had with both Warhol and Nico would fade off by the time the band released White Light/White Heat but would be somewhat influential throught the bands history.

The Birthday Party and Lydia Lunch - Drunk on The Pope's Blood/The Ecstacy is The Agony Split

This was a split live album done by The Birthday Party and Lydia Lunch back in 1982. The Birthday Party were an Australian Post-punk band formed by Nick Cave in the late 70's that disbanded in 1983. Lydia Lunch is a New York based Avant-Garde musician who first achieved notice in New York's late 70's No Wave scene. The album is live, and noisy, which makes it all the better lol. The sound is pretty Deathrockish to me (The Birthdat Party were an enormous influence on a lot of Horror Punk and Deathrock band's to appear after them), even the Lydia Lunch side feels somewhat Horror-inspired. So enjoy.

Sky Saxon (The Seeds, Yahowi 13) dead

The Seeds were an influential American Garage Rock band from the 60's. Their bassist and lead singer, Sky Saxon, died today at the age of 63, the cause of death is suspected to be of an intestine infection, although this has not been confirmed.

Sky Saxon (born Richard Marsh, 1946) was as mentioned before, best known for his work in The Seeds, who in turn were best known for songs like Pushin' Too Hard and Can't Seem to Make You Mine. The latter has been covered by such band's as The Ramones, Alex Chilton, Johnny Thunders, Garbage and Yo La Tango. Following the demise of The Seeds, Saxon joined the Yahowa religious sect, and collaborated in a Psychadelic Rock band called Yahowa 13. In the 80'S, he would collaborate with such Garage and Punk bands such as Red Kross and The Chesterfield Kings. The Seeds would reform for a brief tour in 1989 and stay dormant until yet another tour in 2003.

He died on June 25th, 2009. The same day as pop musician Michael Jackson and actress Farrah Fawcett.

RIP Sky Saxon, your music touched the world.

Angry Rant Against Hipsters

Okay so lately (as in for the past month) something has been troubling me about pop culture. Hipsters. Now to me, being a self proclaimed fan of "Underground" and Alternative music. It pisses me off to see these fucking poseurs danceing in the street. This new wave of yuppie's has obviously become a mainstream obsession. To me its hipocrisy for a hipster to associate themselves with "Indie" music. These hipsters couldn't have less to do with Indie. Favorite hipster bands? I'd say The Kings of Leon or Modest Mouse. So called "Indie" bands. Indie is something else. Indie is appropriatly defined as music of any form, whether its Garage or Rap or Electronic or whatever, that is sold or distributed by Independant labels. Examples include SST Records, Domino Records, Def Jux, Metropolis, In The Red as well as various other record companies. Personally, I take the hipsters as a trend, for a start, LOOK AT THEM! The trendy clothes, the over the top ugly ass sunglasses, doesn't this sound and look like a well manufactured trend made by chain stores in a successful effort to sell to college kids? Now lets look at their background. Technically, the term indie has had many definitions but these days it refers to either A) Upper middle class to Upper class Yuppies that listen to so called "Indie" rock or B) Fans of intelligent Hip Hop music who are mostly of middle class background who dress a lot like the previously mentioned form of Hipster. Personally I dislike of both, they follow mainstream rock/rap but at the same time represent themselves as non conformist rebels (specifically the Indie Hipster). These days, within youth subculture, its impossible to be truly a rebel as A) you are already within the uniform per say of your subculture so conformity is impossible to escape and B) lets face it, the Hipsters are the new thing to promote by major labels, for gods sakes go on itunes and you will without doubt find a band composed of hipsters being promoted. Even better, look at the cast of Saturday Night Live lol.

Stereotypical Hipster:

Large sunglasses or thick horn rimmed glasses
Fashionable, expensive, or trendy clothes
Listens to "Indie" bands that are actually on major labels (e.g. Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Jeans, neither skinny or baggy but inbetween
Adidas or Converse sneakers
Bandana like scarves, I know I hate them to
Claims to be a know it all at Alternative music. But has never heard of Sonic Youth.
Doesn't want to be labeled.
Voted for Barack Obama.*

*Me being a self described Socialist, I view Obama as a false hope for real change, I don't agree with the Fox morons at all.

The 69 Eyes - Framed in Blood | The Very Blessed of the 69 Eyes

This is a compilation album released in 2006 by the Finnish Gothic/Glam Metal band The 69 Eyes. Their music is commonly described as "Gothic metal" but I disagree. Its 3rd wave Gothic Rock. A form of Goth that incorporated more elements of Hard Rock. An influence which was taken from The Sisters of Mercy's work around the release of Vision Thing. It should be noted that the band tend to describe their style as being Goth 'N Roll. Incorporating Hard rock and Goth like many other 3rd wave bands. Anyways great album if you want to introduce yourself to the 69 Eyes and a great piece of modern day Goth rock.

Christian Death - Atrocities

Christian Death album from 1986. Old eh? This was the first full length Christian Death album without founding member and vocalist Rozz Williams. Valor Kand had taken over vocals and had become the band's frontman. Who was better? Thats your deciscion (I think I spelled that wrong). Anyways I'm really tired of all these Valor haters who automatically diss Valor because Rozz doesn't front the band. Did these guys give a shit when Catastrophy Ballet was recorded? No. Because Rozz was still frontman despite the fact that the all the original Christian Death members had long left. They only idolize and worship Rozz because he's dead. Chances are that if he didn't die he wouldn't have the cult following he does now. RIP Rozz you were a great musician.

The Horrors - Strange House

This was the first album by the British Zombie Garage band The Horrors. The album was released in 2007 on Loog Records. Since then, the Horrors left Loog for XL Recordings. It was my first Horrors album lol. The album received mild reception from the music press as The Horrors had by then built a reputation for noise and energy, something the mainstream isn't too fond of. Their gigs became energetic 20 minute epileptic seizures and a tour as an opening act for the Artic Monkeys resulted in mixed reception, the band were often bottled on stage and the audience would throw random objects at them. The kind of energy Britain hadn't seen since The Jesus and Mary Chain and the most hated.

Nazi's Against Fascism - Sid Did It

This was the only single put out by the short lived British 70's Punk Rock band the Nazi's Against Fascism. As the title suggests, Sid Did It is about ex-Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, his personal problems and his violent relationship with Nancy Sprungen. There were only two members of Nazi's Against Fascism; Ben Briely and Heathcote Williams. After NAF, they both went their seperate ways.

Sonic Youth - SYR 8: Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth

This was an album of free-form noise music released by Sonic Youth in 2008, it was recorded at the 2005 Roskilde Festival in July 2005 over the course of one hour. It features Jim O'Rouke on guitar, Mats Gustafsson on saxophone and japanese avant-garde musician Merzbow on his laptop. The title is Danish (i think) for "The other sides of Sonic Youth". Great album for fans of both Sonic Youth and free-form music.

This was a non-album single released by the British proto-Goth band Bauhaus in 1983, it appeared on both a 7" and 12" format on Beggar's Banquet. The version here posted is the 7" version. The single's title track would appear on the CD version of the band's album 1983 album Burning From The Inside. The b-side, Paranoia, Paranoia. Is composed mostly of studio noise, sound collage, random guitar parts and a kick-ass drum machine lol. Great single for Bauhaus fans.

Okay now Green Day have really sold out!

Okay so prior to around 1 month ago, I followed Green Day like it was nobodies business.

But with the new album (21st Century Breakdown) coming out, and the promotion that it gets well, everywhere, I feel as if the band have really sold out. Okay, people have been saying that Green Day has sold out since 1994, or they say they aren't a Punk band or there's nothing Punk about them. I'd just like to say, on the positive side:

Green Day are a Pop Punk band, Pop Punk is an offshoot of Punk Rock which (to me) developed in the late 80's/early 90's in California. They are seperated from punk rock due the often apolitical, sometimes humorous lyrics and more Pop-influenced sound, midtempo sound. Just because your Pop Punk doesn't make you Un-Punk. People respect NOFX as being a Pop Punk band, but people always call them Punks. Even "real punks" (ie. people that whine about Black Flag or The Clash)

Green Day didn't kill punk, it was bands like The Sex Pistols and The Clash that did. Anyone with half a punk brain knows that Punk is based on a Do It Yourself ethic that includes the refusal to sign to major record labels, as this is a sign of selling out and the desire for money. When The Clash signed to CBS Records in 1977, everyone was furious, it showed that The Clash were in it for The Cash. One early speak out against Punk commercialism in the 70's was Anarcho-Punk collective Crass's song Punk Is Dead. Its lyrics pointed out to musicians such as Patti Smith, The Sex Pistols and The Clash signing to major labels and turning out a profit, turining into products of profit for the corporate labels.

Back in 1994, ex-Public Image Limited/Sex Pistols lead singer John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) said that Green Day weren't Punks. Now Johnny has been a respectable, yet criticized figure among punk fans. His shocking appeal being most respected. But it should be noted the Lydon was quite the businessman, and sell out. In the mid-80's, when Public Image Limited were at their height, Lydon operated and owned sizeable amounts of real estate in Los Angeles. Most recently, he appeared in an advertisement for Country Life butter, he was largely mocked as a sellout but increased Country Life sales up by 85% the following quarter.

So it just comes to show, Green Day aren't the first Punk band to sell out;

1977: The Clash & Sex Pistols both sign to major labels

1978: Blondie released Parellel Lines, a straigtforward Pop album, The Clash's "Give Em Enough Rope" shows that the band have no aggresion. Just recession

1979: The Clash's London Calling shows nothing PunkRock about the band. Meanwhile groups such as Teen Idles and Crass start to point out the movement's flaws.

1980: 1st wave Punk fades away and the musicians either move on (Goth rock, Postpunk, Hardcore, Psychobilly ect.) or they sell out (New Wave).

1994: After a long wait "Punk Rock" returns to the mainstream. In the post-grunge mid 90's, this is an easy task. Pop Punk band's like Green Day and the proto-mall rock Blink 182 gain mass mainstream appeal. A backlash occurs withing the Punk movement with DIY Punks and aging 70's Punks claiming Blink and Green Day aren't punk. This is true as they are Punk Pop, which is an offshoot, much like Post-punk and Goth rock. Also Green Day are banned from some club in Berkely, California who's name I've forgotten.

1999-2003: Green Day enter a low period both commercially and musically, going on a"hiatus" for a couple years. Meanwhile, Mall Rock bands, influenced by Blink 182, hit the charts. These bands include Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Simple Plan and Good Charollette among others. There is nothing punk whatsover about these bands, but they manage to be called Punk or Emo bands. Sadly.

2004: Green Day are back, American Idiot is a suprise success. The band are accused of selling out both their original and Dookie fans. But I'll admit, American Idiot is the band's second greatest album after Insomniac. To me, it was the first time since the 70s that a mainstream punk musician could really speak out. Mall Rock keeps climbing up the charts.

2005-2008: Green Day are done with American Idiot, do a tour and a couple of side projects for fun and not for money. Meanwhile Blink breakup and the Mall Rockers are topping the charts by 2007. I'll admit, Fall Out Boy had a couple of catchy songs but other than that they sucked. I'll remember the summer of 2007.

2009: Green Day have their album mass-publicized. Wherever I go theres something about Green Day that bothers me. They have an album put out in the worst, most corporate fashion. It makes me wanna die. Even worse, Blink 182 reforms, announcing public at... The Grammy's? How did they end up there? Plus why? Is this a good way to earn money or what!?

Skold vs. KMFDM

This was a collaborative album between Tim Skold and Sascha (whatever his last name is) from KMFDM. Tim Skold does the vocals and Sascha does the instruments, bringing in the heavy (and awesome) Industrial Rock of KMDFM. There are 11 songs on the album, but 22 tracks, this is because there is a shorter (interlude) version of the songs, sorted randomly inbetween full length tracks. Great for fans of Industrial Rock, KMFDM or Tim Skold. Get it. Plus the artwork, designed by Kevin Marburg is superb lol.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Upside Down single

This was the first single by the scottish Noise Pop/Alternative Rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain. It was released in 1984 on Creation Records. The title track and its b-side would never appear on a studio album. Although Updside Down was included on the 1988 compiltation Barbed Wire Kisses, both songs were included in the 2008 boxed set The Power of Negative Thinking: B-sides and Rarities.

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music

This was an album of Noise music put out by former Velvet Underground Guitarist/Vocalist Lou Reed. The album is composed entirely of feedback from guitars, which was made by placing the guitar amps infront of the guitar strings, which caused them to vibrate and generate sound. Yes, 67 minutes of wobbling guitar strings. Its great if your a fan of Avant-Garde Noise (like me :) ) but if your not into that stuff and it gives you ear pains, Don't get it. Metal Machine Music was rated the second worst rock & roll record ever in 1991 book The Worst Rock 'n' Roll Records of All Time by Jimmy Guterman and Owen O'Donnell. Only Elvis Presley's concert byplay album Having Fun With Elvis on Stage ranked worse. It was ranked #4 on Q Magazine's 50 Worst Albums of All Time and was included on Q's list of 10 Terrible Records By Great Artists. No matter how bad everyone says it is. Metal Machine Music is a land mark, a cult classic and an Avant-Garde great.

The Magic Wands - Black Magic (single)

This was the second single by the American Alternative Dance duo The Magic Wands. It was orignally released as a limited edition 7 inch vinyl in 2008 in england was released as a 7 inch in America back in May. If you look at my previous post. I saw the Magic Wands at the 9:30 Club in DC with The Horrors. I was pretty impressed so I illegally downloaded this 7 inch record. Both the A-side (Black Magic) and the B-side (Kaleidoscope Hearts) appear on the duo's debut EP (forgot the name). They sound awesome live. They're currently touring with The Horrors and The Kills. Review: The Horrors/The Magic Wands concert

As I mentioned yesterday, I went to to the 9:30 Club in Washington DC to see The Horrors, The Kills and The Magic Wands. I didn't stay to see The Kills because I had school the next day, hence why I'm reviewing The Horrors and The Magic Wand.

First off. The Magic Wand; Alternative Dance/Indie band from Nashville, Tennessee/Los Angeles, California composed of guitarists/vocalists Chris and Dexy (don't know their last names) when Chris found a song on myspace that he would listen to all the time. He found that Dexy was singing. Although the two were 2000 miles apart (Chris living in Nashville and Dexy in LA), they became close friends, they'd send eachother old vinyl, letters and strange objects. Eventually they decided to form a band and thats how they ended up where they are now lol. Prior to seeing them I had never heard any of there music but I was very impressed (they sound better live than in studio).

Second, last and best. The Horrors; I've been following the horrors for a long time ever since a friend of mine (yes Paige. It was you lol) kinda introduced me to them. The Horrors were impressive. They haven't overtly changed as some have thought. The new stuff still has some of the Strange House qualities. Faris is a maniac when it comes to going on stage. Joshua got his hair cut. They don't seem to be wearing the make up (or is that for the photo shoots?) with the exception of Faris. Plus they only played the new stuff. Nothing from Strange House. This is probably because they're only an opening act now but if they ever come back (for the love of god please do!) they should definetly headline because they have the cult following to do that. Anyways great concert. I ended up getting a Horrors T-shirt and a button while I was there. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the band's onstage but I have pics of the merch I got;

Yay! First off, I'm gonna post music soon but tonight I'm off to a Horrors concert in DC. They're performing at the 9:30 Club with The Kills and The Magic Wand. I also checked The Horrors website and they have the video for their new single (forgot what it was called) up there. Alright I'm a little ticked by the change to a more Indie, actually Krautrock influenced sound but who cares I'm gonna see them tonight!

A compilation album of material by the Sex Gang Children. It takes songs from all over their many incarnations from 1982 - 2002 and was released in 2004. It doesn't include any remixes and consists entirely of original studio versions of songs, from their 1982 debut EP, Beasts. Till 2002's Bastard Art. Which reminds me, The Sex Gang Children released an EP this year entitled Salamun Child, I'm guessing this is the lead up to a new album :) :) :)! Anyways since the album is 2 discs long, I've had to divide it into 4 parts for downloading, I know it sucks to download so many times. But like I give a shit just fucking download it lol.

Christian Death - Jesus Points The Bone at You

This was a compilation album of non-album singles/b-sides I think of Christian Death songs from the late-80s and early 90's. This is Valor Kand's Christian Death. Both Rozz and Valor's versions of the band are equally great. None better or worse. At the time, Christian Death had not turned into the Goth Metal band we know them as today, they were still a Gothic rock kinda band but Heavy Metal was seeping its way into the band's music, so it was somewhat a turining point for the band. Great album, its no Theatre of Pain, its no American Inquisition, its the halfway stage. Get it.

Bauhaus - In The Flat Field (1998 CD Reissue)

This is the American CD version of the first album by the british Proto-goth/Post-punk band Bauhaus, originally released in 1980 on 4AD I think. It was originally poorly received but received an underground cult following. No singles were released from the album, but the CD version includes a bunch of non-album singles from around the same time. Nowadays its often viewed as a post-punk goth classic, if your gonna listen to any goth for the first time, then I recommend that you get this, it was my first album of "Goth" material (Spring 2008 lol). Infact for a long time (around 6 months), until listening to The Cure . I thought that Bauhaus was the only good Gothic band ever. Now I listen to Bauhaus, All Gone Dead, Sex Gang Children, The Cure.... its a very long list. So enjoy.

Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown EP

This was the first EP by the LA Punk band Black Flag. It was the only album recorded with vocalist Keith Morris and drummer Brian Migdol. Both left by 1979, Morris formed his own band, the Circle Jerks. Little is known about what happened to Migdol, but it is known he played in a country rock band in the 90's. The EP was the first release on the newly formed SST Records, it was originally meant to come out on Bomp! Records but the band felt it was taking too long for it to be released, so they took the masters and the EP was released in October 1978. 200 copies were orignally pressed with a different cover than the one above (Black on white) another version of the EP was red on white. The entire EP can be found on The First Four Years. Its a great introduction to Black Flag, belive me Henry Rollins' Black Flag is more for the Hardcore fans.

All Gone Dead - Fallen and Forgotten

This was the only release by the british Deathrock Revival band All Gone Dead. Its a great album that I found the other day when I was on VampireFreaks. Kinda like a modernised Theatre of Pain meets Rise Against, which I like to call, Melodic Deathrock. Nothing else I can say so lemme give you as history of the band;

All Gone Dead were formed in London in 2004 by ex-Tragic Black bassist Stich as a solo experiment. Somewhere along the line, another Goth musician, Markabre, join. Stich's then girlfriend (now wife) Barb would join shortly afterwards as the band's bassist. Then Mike Mihai ended up joining. Making the band a quartet. Markabre would soon leave due to musical differences. Despite this, the band kept on going, releasing a three demo, 2005's Concieving The Subversion. It got them an award for best unsigned Goth band in the German Gothic Magazine. In 2006 they released their only album, Fallen and Forgotten, which got them a cult following AND an appearence at Wave Gotik-Treffen. Sadly, they broke up in 2008. According to their myspace page, All Gone Dead is dead.

Siouxsie Sioux - MantaRay

The first solo album by ex-Banshees frontwoman Siouxsie Sioux. Compared to much of her work with The Banshees, its a lot darker and way more electronic, almost Dark Cabaret like. Somewhat a bridge between Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Dresden Dolls, Gwen Stefani and BB King. Anyways awesome album, if you liked any of Siouxsie's work with The Banshees or The Creatures than freaking get this!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zerø Kanada

This was an EP released by the now possibly defunct Canadian Post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GYBE). I'm saying that because the band went on haitus in 2003, but never confirmed a break up. But six years is long enough to say they broke up for sure. Now the band are often labeled a Post-rock band, despite their objections, okay, I think they're Post-rock to be honest. But who cares? The Canadian Post-rock scene is dead, Post-rock is obsolete, its something we can only look back to and remember, wtf, I only discovered Post-rock after the style had faded in 2008, the bands had either disbanded or became a lot more conventional.

KMFDM - Kickin' Ass single

This was the first single released by the German Industrial music group KMFDM. It was taken from one version of the album What Do You Know, Deutschland? The single was out of print until 2008 when KMFDM Records reissued it on 7" vinyl, this pressing was limited to 250 copies and as a result, the single is once again out of print. Anyways the band originally disbanded briefly in 1999, due to differences between band members. Infact, their original last album, ironically titled Adios was released on the same date as the Columbine Massacre, something that shooter Eric Harris noted the coincedence of the dates being exactly the same. Another fact was that it was released on Adolf Hitler's birthday, drawing even more controversy to the band. Anyways great single. Get over it Joe Lieberman, they never hurt anyone.

The Sisters of Mercy - Vision Thing

So far the latest studio album by the British "Goth"/Post-punk/Hard rock band The Sisters of Mercy. Vision Thing was released on November 13th, 1990 on EastWest records. By now, the Sisters had abandoned their Post-punk sound for a more Hard Rock influenced sound. Arguably the first attempt to combine Goth rock with Hard rock (apologies to Andrew Eldritch for using the "G" word). So technically, proto gothic metal, in the words of Andrew Eldritch "A fine album". Q Magazine included it in their Fifty Best Albums of 1990'. The album itself is a criticism of then president George Bush, the title is taken from an interview with George Bush, when suggested that he focused more on long term policies rather than short term ones, he responded "Oh, the vision thing.

The "historical" Hardcore punk compilation New York Thrash, as the name says, it was a compilation album released by ROIR in 1982, documenting the New York Hardcore scene of the early 80's, featuring such bands as the Bad Brains, Adrenalin O.D. and the Beastie Boys. Yes, the Beastie Boys had actually formed as a Hardcore punk outfit in the early 80's, but by the late 80's, their sound had drifted into a Hip Hop direction, which was actually better lol, seriously, Beastie Boys work in Hip Hop is better than their Hardcore. Anyways, New Yorks Hardocore scene was late developing compared to most other cities (i.e. Washington DC, Phoenix, LA, San Francisco). It also included more bands from outside of New York City, many coming from New Jersey (e.g. Beastie Boys) and Long Island. Also, it should be noted that the Bad Brains are from DC. But were briefly based in New York due to an unnofficial ban at most DC nightclubs, caused by the bands often unpredicted stage antics of lead singer H.R.. Anyways excellent album, great to blast off your earphones and develop a short-lasting case of Tinnitus.

Interpol - Precipitate EP

An EP by the American Indie/Post-punk revival band Interpol, released in 2001. Incase you didn't know of them, Interpol are a New York based indie band formed in 1997 by a bunch of students at New York University, infact all the original members attend NYU, the band went under the names Las Armas and The French Letter before settling for Interpol, which was taken from vocalist Paul Banks being teased in school, students would say "Paul Paul Interpol" in a spanish accent. Anyways the band ended up achieving noticeable success in the UK and US by the mid-2000's and now, if you ask me, their the only Post-punk revival band achieving any mainstream recognition, most of the other mainstream revival bands, such as Bloc Party, Foals and Franz Ferdinand, have changed their direction to the new Alternative Dance scene's, noticeably in Britain.

The Cure - Pornography

This was, if I'm right, the fourth album by the British Post-punk/Alternative rock band The Cure. At the time of its recording, The Cure consisted of a trio, Robert Smith, Lol Tolhurst and Simon Gallup, all of which shared writing and composition credits on the album. Its a really good introduction to The Cure, trust me, Disintegration is mediocre at best. Anyways the album marked the end of their original "Dark/Gothic" phase (Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography). Afterwards, the future of the band was unsure, the group nearly disbanded, but instead would keep playing, moving away from their "Gothic" sound a more commercially viable sound. However, the band would frequently be refered to as a goth band from then on, despite frontman Robert Smith's objections.

The fouth album by the Australian Neoclassical Dark Wave duo Dead Can Dance, it shows the band in its second stage, departing their original Post-punk/Goth style for a more Avant-garde sound. The album was recorded in an apartment building in London in 1988, released in that year in most of the world but not until 1994 in the US. Its a great album and a good introduction to Dead Can Dance.

Which was composed of all the members of The Melvins, and musician/activist Jello Biafra, best known as being part of the Dead Kennedys, No WTO Combo and his attempt at running for president in 2000. Joy Division - An Ideal For Living EP

This was the first EP and release that the British Post-punk greats Joy Division put out back in 1978. Prior to its release, the band went under the names Stiff Kittens and Warsaw. Its believed that lead singer Ian Curtish came up with the name Joy Division, taking it from a term used to describe prostitution wings of Nazi concentration camps in Yehiel De-Nur's book The House of Dolls. Thanks to the EP, the band were signed to the then newly formed Manchester-based Indie label Factory Records and release two albums. However they would disband in 1980, with the death of lead singer Ian Curtis.

Neu - Neu 75

This was the 3rd, and last album by the German Krautrock duo Neu!. Neu! were formed in 1971 in Dusseldorf, Germany by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, who were both in the German Krautrock (now Electronic) band Kraftwerk at one time. Neu! 4 is often viewed as the band at their best, the first half of the record was composed recorded in the vein of previous Neu! albums, while the other side of the record contrasts the first half, making use of Electric Guitars and proto-punk screaming. The album was legally issued with the consent of both Rother and Dinger sometime in the mid-2000's.

Klaus Dinger died on March 21st, 2008.

Its a great EP and its thanks to this EP that I really started to listen to Bloc Party, I was introduced to Bloc Party when I played Helicopter on Guitar Hero III. Like any of the band's work prior to Intimacy, it is Post-punk revival music. No match to Intimacy but still good.

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

This was the first single by the great British Post-punk band Bauhaus. Its often viewed as being the beginning of the Gothic Rock genre (I disagree, it was Post-punk, proto-Goth). Anyways there have been two versions of this single. On composed with the A-side being Bela Lugosi is Dead and B-side being Boys. And one with the above tracks plus a demo version of Dark Entries on the B-side after Boys. This here is the latter version of the record. This single/EP has been continously in print for the past 30 years and the titile track wasn't availble on a format other than vinyl until the release of the greatest hits compilation Crackle-The Best of Bauhaus. Anyways its a great recommendation to anybody willing to discover Bauhaus or anyone new to "Gothic" music in general.

note: Apologies to Daniel Ash, Bauhuas guitarist, I know you dislike of the Goth term applied to your music.

A 1992 album by the great Post-punk/Goth/Alternative rock masters The Sisters of Mercy. (apologies to Andrew Eldritch for using the G word). The album is entirely composed of singles, b-sides, rarities and covers that weren't seen on regular studio albums. Ranging from the years 1980-1983 and yes I know The Sisters have been around for some time. Anyway its a good album if your into proto-goth post-punk music. I recommend it to any fans of The Sisters of Mercy and "Gothic" (apologies again) music. Enjoy.

This was a 1987 EP by the great Scottish Alternative band known as The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The EP was released just before and album of the same name (Darklands) but unlike its album, it still retains that Noisy pop sound that the band worked with during their Psychocandy album. The band originally broke up back in 1999 but reformed in 2007 and have been touring since.

Yes, he describes his music as being Post-punk Laptop Rap, which unlike traditional rap music, samples Alternative rock and Punk rock in place of Funk, Soul and Pop. His lyrics often mock real life social events and issues, such as online dating, the decline of hip hop, the commercialisation of alternative cultures and illegal downloading. Plus entirely fictional events such as Moby Dick. Its a great album if your looking for intelligent Hip Hop.

Bauhaus - Go Away White

This was the fifth, final and last album by the great British Post-punk/Gothic band Bauhaus. The band was composed of vocalist Peter Murphy, guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins. The band's lineup was entirely the same in both their original (1978-1983) and reformed (2005-2008) stages. The band was originally called Bauhaus1919 after the German art movement but changed to simply Bauhaus, sometime in 1979. All of the band's members went on to do either solo projects or work with other bands since their demise.

Rozz Williams and Gitane Demone - Dream Home Heartache

It was a collabarative album between the two former Christian Death members, Rozz Williams and Gitane Demone, who were obviously best known for their work with Christian Death, the LA Deathrock (and now Gothic Metal) band who are still active today despite the fact that none of the bands original members are performing with them. Anyways Rozz hung himself on April 1st, 1998 (Rest in Piece) and has had a longlasting legacy in Goth, Punk and Underground circles. Anyways its a great album, which is why I posted it. The title is derived from a Roxy Music song (In Every Dream Home a Heartache) which is infact covered on the album.

Christian Death - Only Theatre of Pain (1997 Reissue)

The 1997 CD reissue of the classic cult album by the great Deathrock band Christian Death. This was Rozz Williams' Christian Death which developed in the mid-80s into Valor Kands Christian Death, which doesn't contain any of the original members and turned into a Gothic Metal band back in the 90s. Valor's Christian Death is still performing if your interested. Any the CD version of Only Theatre of Pain, which I have here, combines the original 1982 album Only Theatre of Hate with the 1984 Deathwish EP. Anyways at one point in the late 80s there were actually 2 bands called Christian Death. Valor Kands band and Rozz's band and there was a dispute over the naming rights. Nowadays there is Valor's band and theres Christian Death 1334 (also known as CD 1334). The later is composed of Christian Death members (withouth Rozz Williams, who died on April 1st, 1998) from the Only Theatre of Pain album.

Its a compilation of Dark Cabaret music that Projekt Records put out back in 2005. Its composed of Dark Cabaret songs form various bands and artists from the 90s and 00s. Most of these bands appeared on Projekt sooner or later. The Horrors/Suicide/Nik Void - Shadazz/Radiation split EP

A split EP by The Horrors, Suicide and Nick Void.

Incase you don't know any of these bands, let me give you a little introduction to them.

* The Horrors are a British band from Southend-on-Sea, England. Their music has been descibed by some (including me) as "Zombie Garage", which combines elements of Garage rock, Deathrock, Alternative, Noise, R&B, Punk and Surf Rock to create something new, abbrasive and scary.

*Suicide are a highly influential American Experimental Music duo from New York City composed of vocalist Alan Vega and keyboardist Martin Rev. They've been performing since 1971 and have been described musically as Punk rock, No Wave, Industrial, Electronic and Alternative Dance. They have been recognized as an influence by a variety of artists including and ranging from The Jesus and Mary Chain, Bruce Spingsteen, REM, Henry Rollins, Joy Division, New Order and Lydia Lunch.

*Nik Void. I couldn't find anything about this artist (or band), except he/she/they have only (to my knowledge) appeared on tributes to Suicide. If you know anything about (s)he/them then please tell me in the comments so I can add more information about them.

Rites of Spring - All Through A Life EP

The first, last and only EP by the short lived, influential, yet largely ignored DC Post-Hardcore band Rites of Spring. The band were, along with such bands as Embrace and Fugazi, one of the first bands to be labeled "Emocore" (or "Emo") although like their contemporaries, heavily rejected the label, much like My Chemical Romance does today. The band disbanded just before this EP was released but all the members would reform under the name Happy Go Licky for one year and disband again. This EP was released in May 1987 on Dishord Records and was produced by the great Ian Mackaye. Its now out off print as you can find all the songs on the 1991 compilation album End on End.

This was the first single by LA based Deathrock band .45 Grave (also known as 45 Grave). The band were formed in 1979 out of members of the Industrial band Vox Pop, and from Punk Rock band The Germs. Lead Singer Dinah Cancer has been the only continuous member since its original incarnation and the band has broken up and reformed several times. They're currently touring but haven't released any new material since the 90s.

The Sisterhood - Giving Ground (Single)

The Sisterhood were a short lived side project of Sisters of Mercy frontman Andrew Eldritch. The project was formed by Eldritch because at the time (1986) Eldritch had become the only remaining member of The Sisters of Mercy from the First and Last and Always era as all the other bandmembers had left, so Eldritch formed the Sisterhood simply to make sure that his ex-bandmates wouldn't make use of the name. Anyway its a good "Gothic rock"/Post-punk single (apologies to Andrew Eldritch for using the "G" word).

Sonic Youth - Silver Session for Jason Knuth

Its an album that New York based Alternative/Experimental/Noise/No Wave band Sonic Youth did in 1998, although the album is 29 minutes long, its still viewed as an EP but never mind. The album consists entirely of feedback from the bands guitars, plus the out of sync drum machine here and there, the band dedicated this album to Jason Knuth, a Sonic Youth fan who killed himself. Really good Noise but probably not the most popularily accessable SY album and definetly not a good introduction to SY for a more casual listener.
